The XP machine needs to have account for each user that logs onto it.

The easiest way to acheive this is to create accounts on the XP box with the same username and password as you log onto the windows 98 machine.

As for the xp machine not being able to connect to the win98 machine, ensure netbios over IP is enabled on all the machines and disable the xp firewall, if it is enabled, and any other firewall software you might have installed while you are testing. This way you should be ableto pinpoint the failure.

Check to insure the file structure is same for xp and 98se. If not and it is possible have all machines use same file structure (ie fat32).

Thanks mike, so you mean that I have to create user account on my xp box as local users with the user name and password I use to log on to win98 boxes , or I have to replicate the user name and password I used to log on to xp to all my win98 pc's ,
let's see if I get it rigth , I have diffent user name and password in all the pc's but the point is that I need to create user account on my xp box with the user and password I use to log on to win98

If you're running NTFS in your XP machine, then all the win98 pcs, which are running in FAT32 can not see your XP PC. You can setup peer to peer by using the setup a home or small business network wizard at network neighborhood, then just follow thescreen instructions. Then use your XP CD - perform additional tasks to install the service to all your 98 machines.

Just install NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS protocol on the XP machine, and IPX/SPX on all other PC's. To do this on XP right click My Network Places and select Properties; then right click on Local Area Connection and select properties; now click install and then double click Protocol; click on NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS and click OK. To do this for Win98 right click Network Neighborhood and select Properties; then click on Add; double click Protocol; then double click Microsoft; click IPX/SPX compatible protocol then click OK.
This will now make all your PC's visible in the network after a restart
