Peer to peer without a hub

By markr ·
I'm trying to set up a small network at home between 2 computers. I do not have a hub but I do have a cat 5 cable with the crossover. I use netbeui and have the proper configurations, I think. But they cannot see each other. Is there something special I should be doing for this configuration.

I think I'd remove netbeui and go with TCP/IP. Make sure your IP is static and use the default subnet mask. This way you can ping the ip of the other pc to check for connectivity and then use the other pc to check back.

If you stick with netbeui make sure you are using the same workgroup name as your workgroup.

There are steps to connect 2 PCs Peer to Peer with crossover cable ie.
1. Make sure all of your H/W (NIC and the cable) are working.
2. In Network Properties of Windows 95/98 you should install Client for Microsoft Network, Network Adapter, TCP/IPand/or IPX protocol, File nd Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network.
3. In Identification tab you should define a unique name for each computer and the same workgroup (make sure of this workgroup setting).
4. After you restart you computer, you should be asked for user name and password. Please fill it (do not cancel).
5. Bingo, you already connected. Now you can try to find the other computer.

If you have questions or problems, please feel free to contact me.
Good luck

From the properties of the network neighbourhood, in the configuration,
1) Click on the File and print sharing. enable both "Access to my files" and " I want others to print to my printers"
2) Make sure the FILE AND PRINTER SHARING FOR MICROSOFT NETWORK is added to the network components.
3) Make sure the workgroup name is the same in both computers.
That is all

First,be sure that you are using the correct/updated drivers for the NICs.
Also, a wrong subnetmask will foul everyting up. So, make sure if you go with TCP/IP that your ip addr and sbmsk are correct

Probably the most crucial thing here is the need for one of the machines to actually have something shared (either a drive or a printer) - otherwise, it will not announce itself as a network resource and will not show up in Network Neighborhood.
