I want to know with the limited capabilities for networkin on vista home basic, is it possible to setup a peer-to-peer networking between a laptop & desktop both using windows vista home basic with a normal network cable or do i have to upgrade?

Do you have a router/hub involved, or are you trying to use just a cable between the two computers? If the latter, it's not a "normal" network cable. It needs to be a cross-over cable. They're pinned differently. Need more info.

If you have no internet access on either computer (no router/hub/dsl modem) and you are simply trying to connect two PC's for maybe gaming or file sharing, you use a cross over cable between the two and simply set them both in the same workgroup, set a unique static IP address for each machine and both in the same subnet. Using the network setup wizard on both machines can help with these settings.
