Hi Bredan,

I have a preference for spending the extra money, and using genuine Intel motherboards for Intel CPU systems.
The systems seem to run better, and are a little more stable.

My next choice motherboard manufactures include
Abit
Asus
Epox
ECS
Shuttle

I would avoid
FIC
MSI
PC Chips
Amptron
And most other lesser known manufactures.

A good resource for motherboard information and reviews is www.motherboards.org

If possible, choose a Motherboard that uses DDR RAM.
Per the benchmark tests, it is the fastest performing RAM right now.
You will compromise system performance the most with SDRAM, as it is limited to 133MHz.

As a side note on RAM, if you plan to run W98 or Me, limit your RAM to 384MB to avoid a bug that has given many people problems.

For maximum performance, avoid any motherboard with built-in sound, video, NIC or modems. With a few exceptions, they all use CPU time in place of some of the hardware, which slows the system down.
Also, should you wish to upgrade, or have a device fail, you may need to replace the motherboard.

Chas
