Periodic loss of sound driver

By stevj1 ·
What could be the cause of loosing a sound driver occasionally? My computer looses its sound driver every now and then. I can reinstall it, but at some later date, it inevitably is lost... cause unknown. Can any one please help?

2 things come to mind immediately - a "less-than-graceful" shutdown (powering off without going thru Shutdown), or installing new software. Both can cause system file corruption or written-over system files. Have you been powering off at the power switch? Have you been installing anything new (including cute programs from email or cursors or themes)? If so, that's probably your culprit.

My wife had the same troubles with her sound. After re-installing the sound many times and trying everything (software wise) it was found after replacing the motherboard everything was fine! Maybe check with your motherboard manufactuer and see if there is a history of this trouble. It was the last thing I would have thought of since everything else worked just fine, but the tech support for her computer had been running into the problem alot. Give them a call.
