Permissions in Win2k Pro

By MoodySkipper ·
I have a Windows 2000 Proffessional PC that has just been setup. I also have a CD ROM and CD Writer. I changed the Administrator username and password for myself, so effectively I am the Administrator. My problem lies with both the CD's. I write CD's, but I cannot read CD's on either the writer or the CD ROM. I have checked all the permissions and as Administrator should be able to see or do anything. I know that they work as I have said I can write and I see the normal CD light come on. Also when I put in an installation CD, which should start automatically, it does not.
Looking forward to replies.
thanks

Howell Rees

This doesn't sound like a "permissions" issue. Are you able to go into My Computer, right click on the drive with a CD in it and select Explore successfully? Is this machine part of a network or is it standalone? What CD burning software are you using?

You are NOT describing a permissions problem.

Open explorer by right-clicking My Computer, and selecting Explore.
Locate the icon for the CD reader.
Right-click the icon, and select Properties.
Select the hardware tab.
You are now lookingat a list of devices. Click on each in turn, and read the status. (Look for one or more that say Not working.)

I would be looking for a partially-unplugged cable on the CD reader, but that is just a guess.

Good luck.

This sound like a problem with your writer.
Try opening the cd on another pc. IF it still won't open then you have a problem with either the writer or the software. Try some other software such as Nero or win on cd.
Best of luck

I don't know If I explained my problem well enough, but I thought I would let u all know that I have solved the problem.
When I setup the PC I used the original Administrators access and then created a copy of the Administrator with a different name. Under this second name I unable to get to the CD or Writer. However when I logon as the Administrator number1, I can see the CD, so I shared it and made permissions for Administrator logon number2. I can then go into windows as Administrator number2 and see the CD. A bit long winded, maybe this is the correct procedure, I don't know. Maybe someone can tell me.
