Yes.

The tricky bit that I found is the "pathing" to the SSI scripts. My suggestion is to start with a simple script (maybe a simple "Hello World" written in Perl or other CGI mode, or a canned hit counter). This way you can work out the gruesomedetails before moving on to something useful.

I just have my site navigation in a table and rather tha updating 100 pages - I'd like to insert it as a SSI and update the external text file once. Works great on our web server - but I can't "develop" it on my Win98 machine as I can't figure out how to make PWS understand SSI. No Perl or other CGI should even enter the scenario.

SSI is (almost always) some sort of CGI (like Perl).

What you describe might work with a Javascript include file, however. On many of my sites, I use this technique to provide a consistent "menu" on all of the pages.

<script language="javascript" src="menu.js">
</script>

at the appropriate location in your HTML code will work nicely. Then you just need to update "menu.js".

I like that idea and will probably use it in the future - but of course it becomes problematic for non-javascript browsers. With the SSI, you are guaranteed that all browsers will see the menu as long as the web server is doing it's job.
