Phantom Drive After Ext. Drive Removed

By krclucas ·
I'm running Win 98SE with an Adaptec 2940U SCSI adaptor for my second hard drive (D:), CD ROM drive (R:) and two Syquest removable media external drives. (E:, F:). I have since removed one of the Syquest drives, yet the drive letter remains. Properties in Windows File Manager of the Phantom drive show 0 bytes and I get a disk error if I try to access it. I removed the drive through Device Manager before detaching it from the system to no avail. How can I delete this bad drive letter?

First, try booting to safe mode and once again check device manager for the drive in question. Remove again while in safe mode if it shows up. If that doesn't help, run regclean. Then, if all else fails, run regedit, search for any reference to the drive in question and delete. I would use extreme caution when making manual changes to the registry, however, unless you are well experienced in that area. Be sure to back up the registry before making any changes. Unless proper care is taken, you could find yourself having to reformat and reinstall your OS.

A fair answer and I did find the device again after booting to safe mode. I'm reluctant to just "search for any reference to the drive in question and delete" as it seems to me only specific registry entries would be the cause and only those shouldbe deleted.

Try removing all realmode drivers for this device, usually in config.sys, autoexec.bat and win.ini. You may have to edit the registry, but as stated above - a dangerous operation if you aren't familiar.

While it is true that you kept one syquest drive and removed the other, if you carefully examine the values associated with the drive reference in the registry, you should be able to identify references to the removed drive based on drive letter association, and delete only those references pertaining to the removed drive without affecting the other drive. You will need to remove ALL references to the removed drive, however, in order to insure that the drive no longer shows up in device manager.

Also, have you tried running regclean? This product is produced by Microsoft and is available for download from Microsoft's website.
