picking up old IT's mess

By david ·
Hi everyone. Im picking up where the old IT person left off. They had windows xp and sql2000 running on the same server. The server was being worked on by a third party (beats me) and they have a temp server with a restore from their tape drives. The temp server now has the most current "image" of the office's server/data. The server just got back, but i want win2k server running, so i can implement AD later on. Installing win2k server on our original server and simply backing up and restoring the sql database should leave the software running off of the sql database in good standings, right?? (as long as i name everything correctly of course) Again, im pretty sure this will all go smooth, i guess im just looking for re-assurance. Any response would be appreciated, take care.

leave SQL on it's own box. Whatever server your going to use as a Domain Controller with Active Directory, make that it's own box [makes life much less complicated when you decide to go with Active Directory. If at some time you decide to implement Active Directory, I suggest that you review the migration white papers both for Domain Controllers and SQL server. Really a must read.
