When I go to Windows Update, I get a red x top left of the screen where a picture should be, and the green squares that scroll across the screen to show that the search for updates is in progress does not appear at all. I have system restore off. Is this happening because of a modified hosts file, or an incorrect active x setting, and how do I fix it? If it is the hosts file, where do I find and re-install the default file, any ideas if it is something else? Thanks in advance for your help.
