    PII 233 Random Frequent Freezing

    Locked

    by sknr_99 ·

I know it’s old but it has sentimental value…
I have a PII 233 that randomly and frequently freezes requiring re-booting. I have gone as far as taking out all of the pci & VESA cards all but the video card, reformatting the hard drive and reloading WIN 98 even WIN 95. I’ve tried some BIO’s fixes but I’m shaky at best on BIOS. Help.

If it’s been running good, and you haven’t done any upgrades or software changes lately, I would suspect heat or dust.

Open the case, and get a strong vacumn, and get all the dust out. Pay close attention to the power supply, and suck that puppyout good.

Leave the case open, and let it run for awhile. If the freezing quits, then it’s dust. Also, while the case is open, make sure your fans are all running.

While it’s shut down, make sure all the chips are fully seated. Over the months/years, the expansion/contraction will unseat chips/cards, causing a freeze when the temperature reaches a certain point.

Other than that, dunno what to say.

the thing to look at is how much RAM you have installed. If you are running the min. for 9x (24megs) the PC will lock up frequently. If you are running 32 megs or more you may want to look at your CMOS config.

I would hate to harp on this but I believe it could be your power supply. I have seen too many systems with weird and intermittent problems that were caused by a bad power supply.

Do not rely on a DVM reading on the power supply. I have seen them look good with a DVM but still be bad. You would need an O-scope or even a chart recorder to catch some of the problems with a power supply.

I agree with the dust theory, however you also need to reseat(remove and replace) all the memory and the cpu. If you have a cpu fan, make sure it is still spinning as fast as it used to. If none of this works, open the case and set a box fan so that it is blowing straight into the pc. boot it and see if it is still locking. If it does not lock up, you have a heat problem and will have to deal with that.
