    PIII vs PIII XEON?

    Locked

    by chris.harrison ·

I need to spec a server to act as an SMS 2.0 Site Server plus SQL Server 7.0

The server is for a relatively small firm (200 users), and cost/performance need to be considered.

Ideally I’d like to spec a server with dual PIII XEON’s @ 700Mhz, but I may have to settle for dual PIII’s @ 866Mhz.

I’m uncertain as to the benefit of the XEON processors. Could anyone offer any advice?

    Thanks.

From what I read on Intel’s site, the primary advantage of the XEON is scalability. It seems that they have made specific enhancements for performance in multi-processor environments (especially 4 or 8-way).
It used to be a difference that the biggest difference was the XEON had a full-speed cache, where the regular P-III didn’t. But, of course, with the introduction of the newest revision of the P-III, that is no longer a difference. The XEON is available with larger caches, however (1MB and 2MB). I don’t see much difference in price between the two processors, however (Pricewatch has only about $20 difference).

There is a number of differances between the PIII XEON and the PIII. but the main differeance is the amount of cache it has and that it can handle. My recommandation is that the PIII XEON is the processor for any server and you will see a differance especially when you have multiple users hitting it at the same time. If you need more info on the PIII XEON VS. the PIII check out http://www.intel.com and it has a lot of helpful info about the two.

I think that a system with dual PIII’s @ 866Mhz is going to be plenty. It all comes down to price vs. performance. You guys aren’t rendering any heavy graphics, you are putting up a Site Server and SQL 7.0. The minimum CPU according to Microsoft is only a 133Mhz! Get the dual 866’s (which may still be overkill) get some RAM and be a hero; I mean make your IT Manager look like a hero. Remember-price vs. performance is the way in this sticky little world of IT. Good Luck!

I think that the functions you need (SMS Site Server 2.0 plus SQL Server 7.0) may be satisfied by a dual PIII 866 very very well. I assume that SMS does not require much CPU and keep in mind that you are talking about a relative small firm (about 200 users). I would suggest good disks; think about using hardware RAID 0 to improve performance and availability. Also take care of management functions for the dbms and remind to monitor SMS jobs and initiators. Obviously you can find a lot of information about that on Microsoft web site.
      Good luck Domenico
