Ping -a for WinXP Pro???

By Bobsta ·
Ping -a XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX under command prompt running XP should Resolve addresses to hostnames.
The ping utility works but I'm not picking up the hostname. Has the command changed for the MS-DOS version or do I have an error in my Network setup???

It should still work the same.

This shortcut will get you to the command line reference for XP. It can be run or pasted into a shortcut.
%windir%\hh.exe ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\ntcmds.chm:ntcmds.htm

What exactly are you trying to achieve?

If you ping in revese i.e. "ping -a Hostname" rather than Ping -a XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX then you will gain the IP of the PC/Server you are pinging.
Gaining exactly the same information.
