Ping give frequent Time-outs

By itask1 ·
When ping a host, encountered frequent time-outs. However, when http to it, able to view and navigate the website. Appreciate guide on understanding this - why pinging fails, still able to navigate the site without any problem ? Thanks.

Could be the network card is on its way out. Try another one. Maybe even a better one than you have there. Also check if processing (CPU) Is not too high (Maybe running at 100% most of the time)

Cheers ....

The difference between ping frequently timing out and http succeeding is in the nature of the two protocols. While ping uses ICMP, and when you ping (which is a program that sends one ping message after another) to the target, when the target frequently comes up and goes down you'd frequently encounter ping timeouts (and in many cases the packet loos won't be 100% but somewhere between 0% and 100%). Http, on the other hand is one transaction and out, and so even if the webpage doesn't keep up all the time, you still can navigate, since the page doesn't need to be up all the time.

Apart from this, if you're talking about an office environment, its quite likely that you're within a firewall that prevents you from pinging to a remote host, but doesnt block http requests.

maybe the connection to that host is very slow or it is too far away from you. you are able to navigate that site because http uses tcp protocol which makes connection with the remote host. ping uses icmp protocol which is connectionless so some of the packets may be lost.
