Ping problem on home networking P. help

By ramsin ·
Hello,
I have a laptop and a desktop runing both 98 first edition. I got two network cards (linksys lne100tx and pcmpc100) and using crossed over wire. the file and printer sharing is working but when i give a 10.10.10.1 to one and 10.10.10.2 to second one with the same submask it gives me time out. 127.0.0.1 works on both and each computer recognized her own address using ping but it doesnot recognize the other.
Is this a NIC problem even though file sharing works fine? do i need to assign other factors. thanks for ur help

You didn't say, but I'm guessing you have more than one protocol in common on the 2 machines. I suspect they are communicating using something other than TCP/IP and it is working fine. And PING won't work because it is strictly for TCP/IP, which youmust not have set up right.

Troubleshooting TCP/IP, then, only becomes a factor if you also have modem on the machines.

Hello
rry my english is bad, the solution is:remove all protocols
install only tcp/ip
put the ip adrees i use 192.168.1.1 on first macchine, 192.168.1.2 pn second
put the masquerade 255.255.255.0 in two machine
put all in the tcp/ip Nic properties
rearrange the machines
Verific the led in the Nic is on
that is ok ping in the 192.168.1.1 machine ping 192.168.1.2 and respond with time comunications
Is not OK verifi the Nic or the CrossOver cable.

Check both NIC setting make sure they are both set for The same speed and duplex. If one is set for Half duplex and the other for full will you time out due to collision detection. Also double check all of your TCP/IP settings for possible typos.

It's a LinkSys problem. Buy 3Com NICs.
