I have a new Toshiba laptop running Vista. When I load a DVD it plays just fine. As soon as I connect an LCD projector, it will not run the DVD. Any solutions for me?

Video displayed in Windows Media Player or a browser window will show up on my PC's LCD but shows as a black box on my external s-video device (TV/projector). The rest of the desktop will show on the s-video device.
Windows Media Player and many other Media Players may only display on the output chosen as the PRIMARY device in the display properties (depending on the video codec). If you see a video playing on your PC's LCD screen but just a black box in the media window through the s-video output, change the s-video output to PRIMARY and your PC's LCD to secondary in the display properties
Any other view mode for your extended display settings will bring about the problem you are experiencing - it would also happen with an external monitor.
