      A number of options spring to mind

      1. Physically open the machine and see if the card has anything written on it.
      2. If you have built in sound on your motherboard check the manual for sound specifications.
      3. If only the sound apps were removed then the drivers may still be installed, check your control panel under ‘sound’
      4. If they have been completely uninstalled run the add hardware wizard and see if it picks the sound system up.

      Also look at the manuals about your sound card model, and then to its website. It could be built in. And follow the other guy’s suggestion, run up the recovery disc, it might pick it up, unless you install in another OS.

      You need to look at the sound card to find out what drivers. Here’s a link to Packbell sound driver files

      http://www.packardbell.co.uk/support/node201.asp

      Hi,
      Please follow these instruction to resolve the issue. Win 9x and win2000
      * Click on start-settings-control panel.
      * Double click on system
      * Click on device manager(win95)or Harware –
      Device manager (win2000).
      * Double click on sound controller.
      * Remove the sound devices in the list.
      * Restart the computer and it will prompt you for
      the installation. It should also show you the
      name of the device. It might find the drivers
      by itself other wise you need to point the
      location to the following.
      C:\windows\system
      c:\windows\options\cabs
      for 2000
      C:\winnt\system32
      C:\winnt\system32\drivers

      It will notify if the drivers are installed fine.

      Thanks

      Pull the sound card out and look for any identifying #’s or letters. Then go to driverguide.com and do a search. you should be able to find drivers for it there.

      USA support for Packard Bell products is handled by http://www.priorityonesupport.com

      Once you register, you can download the configuration data, and drivers for your system.

      All the ideas submitted so far sound good, but if you want to know about most every component in your PC (who made it, what model it is, what driver version it uses, it’s capabilities overall). Get on the net and download the free version of SiSoft Sandra, then anytime you need to know anything about your system you will most likely find the answer using with this software. I use it in PC troubleshooting every day in my business. Let me know when you try it out and how well you like it.
