Plextor PX-W4824A Read Failure

by rovoco . Updated 22 years, 5 months ago

I recently installed a new Plextor CD-RW drive in
a desktop running WIN98-SE. It will read most CDs,
but not all! Updated the firmware to Version 1.04
and changed the ribbon cable. No change. Plays
audio CDs O.K. Have requested help from Plextor
via e-mail, but so far no response. Has anyone
had a similar problem? Have been able to read the
problematic CDs on other, slower drives so the
CDs are o.k. All problematic CDs are commercially
produced. In all cases, I can read the CD contents
in DOS. In every case, the system hangs when I try
to install the game or application. I am running
an Asus A7V266-E with an AMD Athlon-XP 1600 and
512 MB RAM. Have tried to find a WIN98-SE CD-ROM
driver update, but MS states that I have the
latest driver installed. Is this a motherboard
chipset driver problem? IDE port problem? It is
very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.
This is my first Plextor CD-RW drive experience.
After all the hype, I expected no problems with
this drive. Any assistance would be appreciated!
