Plextor PX-W4824A Read Failure

By rovoco ·
I recently installed a new Plextor CD-RW drive in
a desktop running WIN98-SE. It will read most CDs,
but not all! Updated the firmware to Version 1.04
and changed the ribbon cable. No change. Plays
audio CDs O.K. Have requested help from Plextor
via e-mail, but so far no response. Has anyone
had a similar problem? Have been able to read the
problematic CDs on other, slower drives so the
CDs are o.k. All problematic CDs are commercially
produced. In all cases, I can read the CD contents
in DOS. In every case, the system hangs when I try
to install the game or application. I am running
an Asus A7V266-E with an AMD Athlon-XP 1600 and
512 MB RAM. Have tried to find a WIN98-SE CD-ROM
driver update, but MS states that I have the
latest driver installed. Is this a motherboard
chipset driver problem? IDE port problem? It is
very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.
This is my first Plextor CD-RW drive experience.
After all the hype, I expected no problems with
this drive. Any assistance would be appreciated!

I have updated the VIA chipset 4-in-1 drivers.
No improvement. Plextor CD-RW drive still reads some CDs but not others. My Windows 98 swap file
is only 427 MB. Most aps and games only require
50 MB or so free space, so I doubt this could be
causing the problem. I noticed that in cases
where the drive won't install from the main menu,
the main menu comes up twice. Is this a clue?

I notice that you are using an ASUS A7V266-E MOBO. They have six IDE ports. The first 2 run off of a Promise controller and are blue in color. The other 4 are grey or black. Ensure you are running your CD-RW off of one of the IDE ports NOT the ones that are supported by the Promise Controller.

To ddollinger - Haven't swapped the cable yet, but I'll bet
you've got it! I'm not sure the board has 6 IDE connectors,
but it certainly has four. The two non-Promise connectors are
buried, so that may be why I did not use them, but I'll find
a way to get at them. Thanks for your help!
