Plug and play floppy drive

By caser85 ·
I have a Dell laptop that has an external floppy drive connected to it. Whenever I am using the laptop and connect the floppy to it, plug and play does not recognize it. I have to shut down and restart my computer to get it to recognize the floppy. What could the problem be? It used to work fine.

Plug and Play will only "find" it on boot up. That's why it will find it on the restart. Without the drive attached on boot, the resources it needs are not assigned.

As caller 1 said Plug and Play does not work only on start up, how it used to work by you is thru a different technolegy not Plug and Play.
Make sure that you did not disable any bios or control panel settings that whould let it detect right when you plug it in.

So you are saying that plug and play can only detect it on start up? Then it must be some separate software that detects the floppy, huh. I need to find out what that software is. What bios settings should I look for to tell it to detect?
