DOS in and of itself cannot recognize any CD-ROM drives.

At a minimum, you need to invoke the mscdex command in the autoexec.bat file.

Most internal CD-ROM drives come with a floppy that will install the DOS driver.

Elsewise, you should be able to download the driver from the drive mfg.

      Another source is http://www.bootdisk.com
What you want is CD-ROM GOd. This file is a compilation of nearly every CD-ROM driver.

You stated that the CD drive is plug and play.
Does this mean it is external?

If so, you also need to install drivers for the port the drive plugs into so that DOS can communicate with the drive.
The port drivers need to be installed prior to installing the driver for the CD drive.

Thank you for your quick reply. I did go to the site you mentioned and was able to get a generic driver for the CD ROM drive and its going fine…
