Pointsec and wiping the hard drive PLEASE HELP

By yesdear47 ·
Late last year when my employer closed it's doors, the owners raffled off it's laptop computers to the employees. Well I was the lucky recepient of a Dell Latitude D600. Since I already owned a Dell desktop, I threw it in the back of my closet and forgot about it. Now I have use for it. Here's the problem, there was nothing done to these laptops when we got them. I turned it on and there sits Pointsec. I just want to wipe this entire computer clean. There are no files I need to recover. This laptop is going to be for my 5 year old son, for his computer games and basic internet access. I am pretty good with computers and have been reading about "Hard Drive Wipe" programs that are available but will these type of programs delete Pointsec too. Any suggestions? Where do I start?

Couple of questions

1st if you re-format the Hard drive, it should get rid of all programs on it.

Do you have a Operating System CD, i.e., Windows XP or 2000? If so you can use this to reformat drive and load the new system on it.

there are other methods with older operating systems, just give information on what you plan to use.

I used to use Norton Utilities to wipe hard drives securely, there are many more 3rd party software to do this also. Another way is to use the Control Panel and remove any programs not wanted, this will keep the operating system for use.

Note: if you wipe the hard disk, with a 3rd party software, without any operating system to re-install, you will have to obtain one before using the D600.

Make sure you get the registration numbers for the OS

by jdclyde In reply to Couple of questions

before you wipe it. MANY people will put the Windows sticker right on the system, so it wouldn't be a problem, but if it isn't, then run magic jellybean and then when you reload you will have the legal numbers.

Make sure you download all of the drivers you will need and burn to a CD.

From there, booting to even a win98 disk and do a format, and then put in your xp/2k disk and do a format and install and you will be in good shape.

If the 98 disk doesn't get you to where you need to be, a linux live cd will.
