POP "From:" Error

By boconnel ·
We are receiving some e-mails with a blank From: field which makes replying rather problematic as you can imagine. This happens with both Outlook and Netscape clients of different versions. We are running POP mail. Any suggestions?

POP "From:" Error

I would first start with, Is the e-mail nuisance based/spam that you really don't care to receive.
Most often the blank From: field would indicate someone not wanting to divulge their true address.
There are options under both Outlook and Netscapethat allow you to "view mail headers" - from there you should be able to get a good idea of the messages'origin.

For a more indepth viewpoint you can point your web browser to the following - it should offer some insight.

Thanks for the quick response, this is not spam. This mail comes from normal business correspondents. In looking at the header information in Outlook, the From: field is also blank. From the context of the message, since it is a normal business correspondent, I can figure out who it is.

I am unsure about Netscape, but in Outlook, you can put whatever in the "from" field; Outlook doesn't care. Check in the Account Properties and see if they left these fields blank by accident.

Thanks for your suggestion. If we go into our SMTP server we can see the information in the FROM: field. The issue seems to be in the POP server.
