POP3 time Out Error on Win 98 LAN

By merrik ·
Hello

I have just set a a 5 PC Lan running windows 98. I have set up internal email using the free "1st Class Mail Server" and Outlook Express. When i send mail between the machines the messages are received as soon as the Send/Rec button is pressed in Outlook Express, but Oulook Express then continues to try to communicate with the Mail server (i think). It comes up with, Your Pop3 server has not responded in 30 seconds" When i tell it to stop waiting i get the error:

A time out error occured while communicating with the server. Acount BridgIT, server Laptop2, Protocol POP3, Port: 110, Secure (SSL):No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

Each time you press send/rec a new copy of the message is downloaded to the client machine.

What is causing these errors and how do I fix them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated including suggestions on other free mail servers that will allow 5 users.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook express as these machines are being used to run internet/email workshops for beginners in the community, we would also prefer to keep the email component internal (not use the net).

Many thanks
Merri

I would recomend a product called EMWAC. it is a free mail server that is supplied by a university, it works well and I have used it in several enviroments, it is easy to setup, and can be configured to work through firewalls with ISP's so as to allow email access. It works of your NT servers User List for Authentication. You can find it here

I don't know anything about "1st Class Mail Server" but it sounds like the software is trying to use a POP3 server for mail transfer (Outlook uses SMTP). I would check configuration information on the software and see if you can find anything that refers to a POP3 server and remove it (make sure you take good notes first in case you have to rebuild the information).
