A simple fix might be to download one of the toolbars that have built in popup stoppers (such as Yahoo Companion or MSN's toolbar. Or why not install a popup stopper program. I used Pop-up Stopper Free Edition http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html before getting the Yahoo! Companion toolbar and it worked great for me.

I know this doesn't address WHY the pop-ups are occuring but it should provide some relief until you can figure that part out.

1. google.com - download their tooldbar - free with pop-up blcoker, no ads

2. Goto lavasoftusa.com and download adaware... - free update it, scan entire pc.

3. Homepage is being redirected to some website, change it to something normal.

4. hosts file has external websites in it... remove anything after 127.0.0.1 (use notepad - do a search on c drive for hosts)

First Make Sure your computer is fully patched/updated. Then download HijackThis! from www.cnet.com and run it. I suspecet that it will disclose the problem entry in the regestry.

(use caution as this is a powerful tool that can do both good and evil)

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
There are links to Hijackthis, CWShredder and a few other great tools. One of them will solve your problem. Also, when checking your hosts file, make sure you scroll all the way down. I had one malware that added about 100 blank lines and then inserted its uglyness.

There is a simpler solution:

Stop the messenger service.

Look for the Administrative Tools folder either on the menu or in the control panel. Double-click Services, then double-click Messenger.

From here, you can not only stop the service, but disable it, but set the startup type to disable so it will not restart. The only drawback is that you cannot use the NET SEND command. This will eliminate all of the Messenger Pop-ups (gray screen) that appear.

I use a small tool called Hostess 3 with eDexter for managing Hosts files. New downloads are available for new IP's, which block porn and other junk sites. See>>> https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/main.htm
