Port 80 Network Error
Lockedby ddvorpahl · about 19 years, 11 months ago
I receive the following error when I try to go to various sites:
Network Error
Unable to request URL from host http://www.xxxxxx.com:80: Operation timed outI xxx’ed out the real site name as it isn’t important but the problem is.
I have no third party apps running only Norton Antivirus. This just started and I have checked all the Internet Explorer 6.0 settings, have done all the updates and still I get this error on some sites.
AOL lets me get to these sites ok, but I don’t like using AOL for this.
Do I need to delete 6.0 & reinstall it?

Have you tried navigating to your Temporary Internet Files and clearing out all of those files? Also be sure to clear out your Cookies folder.
If that fails to help, then download Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoft.de and install and run over the computer having problems.

Are you using a proxy to navigate. I’ve seen this behavior in IE with wrong proxy configurations.

To: carlos.nino@terra.es,
As I said before, I have no third party apps running that would cause a proxy problem.
If you have any more suggestions, please tell me.
Thanks.

Okay, then you are looking at some setting causing this problem.
Within IE… go to Tools –> Internet Options –> Connections –> LAN settings –> and uncheck everything –> OK out –> reboot and see if the problem still exists.
If that does not resolve… then go to Tools –> Internet Options –> Advanced –> click on the “Restore Defaults” button –> OK out –> reboot and see if it still exits.
If still unresolved and the sites are not a problem via AOL, I’d be mighty curious as to which sites are creating this problem… but you can also try an uninstall –> reboot –> reinstall of IE. Also make sure you are using SP1 with IE6.

Unless you have this issue with all webpages in IE6 I don’t see a need to go through a bunch of drastic changes like reinstalling IE or Windows. First make sure there’s absolutely no mistakes in the URL and that the complete web address is being used. One way to check is to try a search for the webpage. If the URL is correct or close it should come up in a search. If lucky it will open correctly from there. Then you can see if there’s any difference in the way you’re typing the URL from the page that actually loads.
The site your going to may have the setting that’s causing the problem. Perhaps in AOL you have a stored cookie that’s allowing you to acces the site.Could be an issue with the firewall that allows AOL to connect but not IE6. The firewall may allow all activity from AOL but filters IE6 if there’s any extra port activity. Or the firewall may take too long to complete the process thus the time out error. Check the firewall log files to see if there’s anything there.
Also you may need to include the HTM file name in the adress. So an example of that would be http://www.xxxxx.com/index.htm. Or even just add the ending foward slash.Just some things to try.

To Anna777:
I have the exact same setting in IE as my son who has Win XP Home Version and the same settings as I have at work. My son is connected to the same Linksys Router as I am. At work I am connected to DSL through a BellSouth Router.
I connected to these sites before with the same computer at home. It is only recently that I cannot connect to these sites. I have not yet reinstalled IE, however. -

To RCOM:
I have the same url, address, name, whatever you wish to call it in AOL as I do in IE6. I have changed nothing. As I said before, I can type the same information on my son’s computer as my own but, with his, get to the site. I don’t know what else to do but to reload IE6 and hope for the best. My concern is the e-mail, outlook express, favorites and just reloading any Microsoft product in general. Thanks for trying.
