Sometimes it's helpful to know the mfg and model of the modem. Also, what version of Windows do you have, specifically? But, let's look at the usual suspects.

Frequent problems with modems are: Conflicting comm port usage. e.g. modem using same port as mouse or serial device.

Conflicting IRQ setting with another component. Since most of these modems are winmodems, the IRQ is set by Windows and there are no jumpers.

Modem hardware is installed before the software that came with the modem. These modem types usually rquire that the software be installed first, and then install the modem. If you've done that, try uninstalling and removing the modem. Reboot and then re-installing software then hardware.

So, I can't give you a solidanswer until you have explored the Windows Device Manager and ensured that these problems do not exist. Note what the settings for the modem are in device mgr, even if there appears to be no conflict.

I may be able to help more once you've collected this information.

The modem is a motorola SM56 speakerphone modem.
I check the device manager there are no conflicting devices.Iam using a windows 98 operating system.

I deleted the former dial-up networking connections and recreated another one and the modem seems to be working properly now.I don't know what will happen later in the day.
Thanks

This is common when Rnaapp.exe is active in memory
1)Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Close Program dialog box
2)Click Rnaapp to select it,and then click End Task
3)Start Communications Program
When you finish using a communications program and close the connection,Rnaapp.exe is still running and the port remians unavailable to non-TAPI programs
Rnaapp.exe is left in memory to allow TAPI programs to open faster.
It is eventually unloaded from memory

the "port is already open" uasually means that you have some program running that has claimed control of the modem. Since this modem has speakerphone capability I would first suspect the speakerphone software, or perhaps even fax software as the culprit. Finding these can be a real problem, and they don't always show up in the task manager, but they do uasually have an icon somewhere in the start bar. Check all of those (both on the left and the right side of the start bar) and close any that are related to phone, fax, or modem.

Go to Start - Run, enter "msconfig" and OK it. Uncheck the "Load startup group items" box, then OK to exit. If the modem diags OK, then go back to Msconfig and go to the startup tab, all the boxes should be unchecked. Check them one at a time, restarting and doing modem diag between each one, until you see the open port message again. The last item you checked in msconfig is the culprit. Good luck.

This is because you've probably just terminated the connection or some other device/program is using your modem (ICQ etc.).

Press Ctrl-Alt-delete to bring up the Windows TaskManager window. Look for the Rnaapp task, and end it. This should bring your modem to respond properly again.
