Port Blocking

By d.jones092 ·
I have heard recently that programs like AIM and the MS flavor of Instant Messenger are becoming more intuitive at getting around port blocking. Is this true? And if so, is there a whitepaper anywhere on what they are attempting to do and what can be done about it?

Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Port Blocking

AIM tries to connect to login.oscar.aol.com on every single port imaginable. I tried writing them down, but there were too many. login.oscar.aol.com points to two addresses 64.12.161.153, 64.12.161.185. I set two false routes on my firewall for these addresses, now AIM does not work on my network.

I don't know if MS IM is the same.

I don't know what they're doing, but I just have my firewall block any application I don't explicitly tell it to allow through. It doesn't matter what port it tries. They are all blocked to AIM. Admin could set this up easily enough so that users can't give permissions.

Best you can hope for is to block the logon servers for the IM programs. AIM and I believe MS also allows you to change the default port, thus making it impossible to block especially since it can all but imitate port 80 http traffic. There are a few articles on the subject but none of them I've seen give much hope on blocking it. Check your firewall vendors website. I know Watchguard has an article or two on blocking IM as well as if you have a forum specifically for your firewall it will provide more insight as to how others are making it work.
