Port Forwarding for port 25

Not sure if this is called port forwarding or not.

Anyways, I know that port 25 is used for SMTP, and is also used by trojans and spam, and that’s the last thing I want.

I have a win2k exchange server sp3, behind a Dlink 604 router. In the router interface, there’s the option to allow SMTP through. It has a private and a public port.

Both private and public ports are at 25, and everything is working great. However, if I change the private port to something else, that’s not being used, will I still be able to receive email?
Is there a setting that I will need to change on the exchange server at all?
Is this scenario possible, or do both private/public ports have to be the same?
