Portable Magnetic card swipe reader

By Mike@DuPont ·
Background: I am the IT manager for the Hospitality division of our company. We own a Golf course with 6000 members. Each member has a membership card with a magnetic stripe that has encode their membership number.

I am interested in finding aportable device that you can swipe the member card through and the device would display their name, membership type, etc. The membership information we have in our membership program.

My thinking was take this membership data convert it to ASCIIand download it to a Palm. Then find a magnetic card swipe that would connect to a Palm. Where would I find a card swipe that connects to a Palm? Is there someother device you know of that would even be better than this?

Portable Magnetic card swipe reader

I have been researching this type of hardware for an application myself. Though I haven't yet tried them, the Mag stripe readers from Symbol Technologies look promising (I have used other Symbol products for warehousing applications). You can find info on their MSR 3000 product at the website: http://www.symbol.com/products/mobile_computers/mobile_portable_msr_3000.html . This device interfaces with their PALM based SPT 1700 and PPT 2700 "pocketable computers".
