You're looking at getting some sort of personal Firewall program to do this in 98.

One I use is lockdown, but there's a bunch of different ones (like from Mcafee or Norton) that should fit your need.

The previous person suggests lockdown for firewall protection. This firewall application installs above the TCP/IP layer. BlackICE installs below the TCP/IP layer and would be a better choice in my opinion.
Just about any firewall program out will allow you to block ports.

If you have 98SE and you are talking about blocking that port from the internet...

Go to http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/
Search all products for Q241570

This article explains security settings using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)..

Yes - it sounds like you are looking for a firewall-type solution. Not knowing your environment, I'll add some general comments/suggestions:

1. Install, RUN !, and KEEP CURRENT ! a good Anti-Virus system. I use Norton, but there are many other good ones out there.

2. BlackIce is a good firewall solution, but it does not stop outgoing connections, such as are opened by Trojans. (These suggestions recently enabled me to deal with one myself).

3. ZoneAlarm from Zone Labs is an extremely good firewall solution, also detects and blocks unauthorized outgoing connections, and , above all - is FREE for home use.
(See http://WWW.ZONELABS.COM)
Also - you can augment that with ZoneLog Analyser - also for free - that will help with analyzing the resulting logs.
(See http://www.mcs-online.co.uk/zonelog )

4. Check your open ports, etc. by using Gibson's well-known "Shields Up" service at:http://grc.com . He also includes a wealth of other information about how to set up your network configuration for maximum security.

Hope this all helps :-)
