postgresql installation

I tried to install postgresql8.3.0 but while running ./configure –enable-EUC_JP ive got a prob wth the GNU readline it says it cannot be found i have checked the conf.log and it says it was not defined for confdef.h in about 6 ways i.e. PC etc
how do i correct it
btw i am trying to install it on fedora core 8
and the GCC i installed it is a i686(if that is a prob) coz i bont think the arc i am runnin on is an 686 please let me know if it affects the readline conf
