I work in an environment of about 100 users. We use Exchange for email (hosted ourselves). Our email is filtered by a perimeter appliance very similar to Barracuda’s mail security appliance, and it generally works great for us.
Recently some members of management have proposed switching our email services from our Exchange infrastructure to Postini. A few of the reasons that have come up is the low cost of the Postini service, the ability to create personal white and black lists, individual user quarantines, and other features. There also was a significant amount of Google name dropping.
Given that we can accomplish many of these features with our existing infrastructure, I have a hard time rationalizing the change. How would shared calendars and directories be handled… What about collaboration…?
It seems to me that Postini is probably a good idea for a SOHO environment, but I don’t know about a mid-sized corporate environments that already have infrastructure invested. It also seems that there might be many trade-offs too. I am also really reluctant to give users access to their quarantine for security reasons. What about false positives… What about losing centralized control… What about privacy… ??
I was wondering how other professionals felt about the service.
Was hoping to get a few pros and cons and general opinions of the service from the point of logistics, technicals, management, etc. The more detail the better!
