ANSI secrets

Ever wondered how to get special characters like ?., ? or ? in your document? You don't need any special software installed. Windows has it's own inbuilt character map utility, which you can use to identify individual special characters. Using copy and paste you can insert them into your document. However, this is a very slow procedure, and it is much quicker to use the ALT key for those characters which are used frequently.

For example, [CTRL]+[ALT]+[C] gives ?.. Similarly, [CTRL]+[ALT]+[R] gives ? and [CTRL]+[ALT]+[T] gives ? . .

Special characters are usually entered using the numeric keypad and a 4-digit ANSI code. Each character is allocated a particular slot, and the character in that slot can be inserted by pressing the corresponding key on the keyboard, or by holding down the Alt key and tapping 0 followed by 'nnn' on the numeric keypad where 'nnn' is the 3-digit code for each special character.

For e.g., to get the pound symbol (?):

* Press and hold the [ALT] key
* Type 0163 on the numeric keypad on the right
* Release the [ALT] key to see the symbol

Obviously , it is dependant on the language settings...

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Keyboard shortcuts

... because Alt+0163 on my keyboard/computer produces ţ (Latin small letter T with cedila) when viewing the Symbol font, while on the other hand, on my keyboard/computer, the keystrokes ALT+0023 produces the number sign #, otherwise known as the pound sign, when viewing the same font. Of course, it makes a difference in what font you're viewing in the Character Map, but ALT+0163 does NOT produce a pound sign on my computer.

Have you tried....

.... changing out the keyboard?

Could be they spilled something in the one you're using which would short the E and the 3 keys.

(edited to add)

And, by the way, I don't see the pound symbol in your original title. I see a question mark. I don't know if this is by design, if it's the forum changing things, or if you think you can see a pound sign or not... but it could be relevant to your problem.

Hmm. I see "pound symbol (?):"

by seanferd In reply to Have you tried....

I think it is TR. Something here has been gagging on non-alphanumeric symbols. It seems that some are fixed now, where apostrophes don't wipe out half a sentence in titles, for example.
