    Power Supply

    Locked

    by beerman97 ·

One user in our remote office is complaining of a noisy fan on a power supply. We don’t have the tools needed to yank that fan off of the power supply so I am going to replace the power supply. What do I need to know so I can get another one from a different computer, or do I need to go buy a new one from the vendor? This will be the first time that I am replacing power supplies, what do I need to know before I jump head first into this project? The computer is a Gateway E-4200. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Two important things to keep in mind:

      1) Will the new power supply fit the old case?

      2) Will the output voltages be correct for the motherboard? Newer motherboards have processors that run at lower voltages compared to older CPU’s.

Given that it’s a Gateway box I’d suggest checking with them first about a replacement since they are most likely to have units that will fit their cases.
