Power supply/motherboard issues—need help!!

by matter2003 . Updated 18 years, 4 months ago

OK, I have been building my own computers for many years now, but have never had an issue like the one I have been having. I had my newly built computer running perfectly fine for about 6 months. One night we started having thunderstorms late at night, so before I went to bed, I turned off the computer, and unplugged it from the power supply to ensure it wouldn’t have any problems. The next morning, I come back downstairs, plug it back in, and nothing happens. I opened the case, played around with it for a little while, and it finally came back on. One of my harddrives became disconnected while doing that, so I had to turn it back off, reconnect and turn it back on, and nothing again. This time it took a good 15 minutes of playing around to get it to come back on. Again, something wasn’t in right, so I had to turn it back off and restart it. This time, it went dead and wouldn’t come back on. I thought it was a bad power switch, so I attempted to jump it with a screwdriver to the power plug in on the MB…no luck. I then tested a few other power supplies with the board and no luck either. I took my power supply that I had out of the non-working computer and tested it in my working computer—no luck. It appeared the Power supply and the motherboard had malfunctioned. No big deal—both were under warranty. I got RMA numbers, sent them in for repair. Get the MB back, test it, and nothing. Call the company and they claim nothing was wrong with it when they tested it. Told me to just connect the fan to the MB and see if it starts working when you turn it on. Tried it, and nothing again. The guy told me to send it back, which I did. Power Supply came back, and apparently something was wrong with it because they sent me a brand new one in a box. MB came back, and again it appeared to be the same board. Hooked the power supply up to my MB, and again, nothing. I take the power supply and hook it up to my working computer, and the MB light comes on, but when I hit the power button, nothing happens. When I plug the original power supply in, it works fine again.

I need some help here—I cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on here—I guess they could have sent me a new power supply that was DOA, or partially DOA. The MB has got me very frustrated and the tech keeps telling me it tested fine, which I have serious doubts on—I am not some newbie that doesn’t know what he is doing—I have built, tested and fixed computers for many many years now. I bought quality retail parts, not cheap generic ones, so that should not be an issue. Is there anything else that could be at play here?? I have tested with just the MB, the power supply and the CPU fan, and have gotten nothing from the MB(the new one has no light, so I can’t see if it has power or not). I am confused as to why the power supply would give my other MB power(the light comes on), but will not power up the system, even tho my other PSU works just fine. No it is not a watt issue, as the one not working is a 500W PSU and the working one is a 350W one…

Please help, this is driving me nuts!!!
