PPTP VPN and web browsing

By sgreene727 ·
Is there a way to configure a client to use PPTP VPN and still browse the web? I've tried unchecking the setting "Use default gateway on remote network" and manually adding the VPN networks DNS as primary with ISP as secondary DNS...but no joy either way.

not sure if this will help but here's what I did:

I have IPCop running as the firewall, port forwarded to 1723 on the XP VPN machine. I connect, and tell my browser to use (the squid proxy that IPCop is serving up)

works well.

Though, you could try to find another proxy to run on the same box, and then point your VPN client's browser to it.

I have not tested this one, but it's worth a go.

I've never experienced problems accessing the web via a VPN, but it sounds like you're referring to split tunnelling. This allows traffic bound for the remote LAN to travel via the VPN connection and Internet traffic to go outside the VPN. I have no idea how this can be set up but I understand it presents a security risk whereby you local PC can route traffic from the insecure network (Internet) to your remote LAN. Sorry I can't be of more help.
