Preparing to move our entire Data Center

By djames ·
I am the network administrator for a small college. We have a very small shop (5 people) so everyone has to be multi-tasking! We are preparing to move our entire Data Center from the flood zone basement to a flood free location (we hope). I have scoured the internet, absorbing any and all planning docs on such a project. Does anyone have any tips, suggestions they would like to share? We are moving Novmeber 2005 and I don't think we can overplan.

You're right!!

You can NEVER overplan. I lead the move of a company from one city to another. We moved 500+ desktops and printers and 200+ servers in 4 days. What I found helped the most was to create a project plan that included literally everything, down to ordering of food for the staff working. Without that level of detail, something was surely to be missed. Good luck!

What about users

I have itemized everything that I need to move, the order in which it needs to be connected, etc. We anticipate 2-3 days of network downtime. How much information did you provide to your network users, in my case faculty? I want them to understand the scope of the project to help them accept any downtime. I was thinking of a web site with general information such as anticipated dates/times, maybe a few pictures?? What do you think? Did you get alot of user support/buy in?
