I prefer to use Norton Personal Firewall. It really stops pop ups. Although there are some good ones as well.

Windows itself has no real mechanism for preventing pop-ups. As the method that pop-ups are generated change so frequently, it is important that whatever solution you choose that you upgrade it on a regular basis. My pop-up killer of choice is AdAware, and I reinstall it monthly to keep the definitions current.

Go to www.mozilla.org, download the latest browser, install the browser & open it, go to edit>preferences>privacy & security>popup windows>and check supress pop-ups. Use this browser for all surfing that doesn't require a secondary window to open. Use IE to allow any secondary pop-up windows when necessary. You can even skin the browser to look somewhat like IE and import your favorite links.

We use this browser on the middle school computers and it's a godsend w/ the young kids that used to have 50 windows open and constant lockups due to all those pop-ups.
