It's telling you that the hard drive

is about to fail and if you don't do something about it you will lose all of your information that is on it. Solution replace the hard drive and backup your Data.

If you "dont want to replace this Hard drive.." ...

You better get ready for having a computer that won't boot and has nothing in it anymore.

It's a WARNING of the inevitable - the HDD has almost worn out. Better to know now, than when it finally dies.

run Linux from CD that would be a way of getting around replacing the drive.

Even running from a Live Linux CD, it wouldn't prevent hard disk accesses from taking place, then ultimately the hard drive would still die (and take all its data with it).

No not really OM

As once the HDD has Died and gone to Silicon Heaven they could run it off a Live Linux and save their Data to a Flash Drive if they really do not want to replace the HDD.

But I just hope they at least are performing Regular Backups on different media or when the drive fails sooner rather than latter and most likely while they are doing the Backup they will lose their Current Data and their Backed up Data in one Foul Swoop.

But hey they did not have to replace the HDD.

I meant

after the hard drive failed. The OP doesn't want to replace it so they would have a use for the System. I had an old notebook that the hard drive had failed and I used to boot a DOS game from a floppy. The kids loved it.

Could even use the Linux CD to retrieve Data before it fails.

You have no choice if you want to keep using this computer

You Must Backup all your Data & Settings and then replace the HDD.

The Drive is failing and will eventually stop completely and this will be sooner not latter.
