Primary Domain Controller

By Brian ·
I have a Win2k Server that is a primary server. I would like to change the primary domain name. I do not think you can do this but maybe you can. I hate to have to start fresh. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just discovered that MS has a tool for renaming domains available on the Technet Downloads website:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domainrename.mspx

(remember to remove any spaces in the url)

I've never used it so I don't know if it will work for you, but check it out. Hope this helps!

There is no way to rename a Win2K domain once created. The only way is to start fresh. The tool mentioned in Answer 1 is ONLY to be used with Windows 2003 server. The URL given specifically says that the tool CANNOT be used with Win2K.

I have heard of people actually changing the domain name in labs before, but never in a production environment. It would require DAYS of testing, tweaking, fixing, and even then, they normally don't run quite right. I would recommend creating a new tree and using ADMT to move your users / groups / computer accounts over. Then it is just touching the desktops and servers (which you would have to do anyway...)

You cannot rename a domain in Win2K. You will be able to do so in Win Server 2003.

You will need to create a new domain with the new name and use ADMT to migrate your users over.

Run dcpromo and demotge it to stand alone. Then run dcpromo and run the wizard to setup the new domain.
