Print job hangs, ANONYMOUS LOGON

By swlovett ·
I have several print servers with several printers on each one. Occasionally, a print job will get 'hung' in the spool and has to be cancelled in order to let other jobs print. When we display the queue, the owner shows as 'Anonymous Logon.' We usually know who the print job belongs to and they are logged on as their valid userid. A resubmit goes fines. Somehow, the real owner of the print job gets lost and replaced with anonymous, which probably has a lot to do with the hang. The event log logs errors concerning that a temp file could not be opened - probably because of the lack of permissions of an anonymous user. There is plenty of disk space available on the server.

Anybody seen this before or have any ideas how to track it down?
System notes: All servers and clients are NT 4.0. The servers are at SP6a. The print server uses JetAdmin software. The printers are primarily HP4's.

TIA,
Steve

Print job hangs, ANONYMOUS LOGON

HP advocates printing directly from the workstation to the printserver (via an installed HP JetDirect Port). I am going to assume that this is how your printing is configured.

It sound to me like you have a Win9x client that has bypassed the login and is printing to the printer directly. Perhapps you should look at your problem from an oppisite viewpoint. Eliminat who is NOT causing the problem by validating who is correctly authenticated to the network. Hopefully your network is small enough that this will not be a daunting process. You might be able to narrow the field by location or department.
You will probably find a user that has a valid user account and an expired or disabled password.

In future printer rollouts, I would recommend a server to connect to the JetDirect and all client printing be attached to the server print share. This will give you a central point for management, control, and driver updates (and on the down side, a single point of failure).

Good hunting... Ray

Thanks Ray, but I am not sure how you arrived at some of your suggestions.

The printers are all network printers attached to a print server. The Jetadmin software I mention would be useless if they were not.

I've never heard of Win9x clients being able to access the network without logging in unless some sort of anonymous login is allowed, in our case it is not. If they can, it sounds like a pretty serious security hole to me. We are a fairly large military installation and the chance of somebody getting on this network w/o a valid login is pretty slim.

Besides, I pretty clearly state that all my clients are NT so Win9x is not a part of this picture.

Also I state that a resubmit of the same print job from the same user works fine, so the user is obviously logged on.

Sorry if I sound a little frustrated. I have posted this question on a number of boards and, although I have found several other people with the same problem, I have found no intelligent suggestions as to why this is happening. It is a little more frustrating when it appears that the responder has not really read the post.

Steve,

Your comments, although mostly factual, were ungracious. I would venture to guess that most people in this forum submit answers, not for personal gain, but to support the community. Your criticism of an answer, even a blatantly incorrect one, only serves to inhibit people from offering their assistance. It is true that I overlooked certain key points in your question and jumped to a completely wrong conclusion. On the other hand, you have demonstrated your own fallibility by your ignorance of a common Win9x insecurity. Point being? Nobody is perfect.

On to your question, I believe, as evidenced by your lack of pertinent responses, that your question is lacking certain empirical data that would lead to a solution. What do you call a ?Print Server? JetDirect 300X, 500X, NT Server, Workstation? What is your print server configuration? Protocols? I see now that you did mention that you could usually identify the user with the problem. Is the problem confined to a user, a group of users, a workstation, or a location? Is it predictable or random? Having read your question several times, I still know nothing about your problem. Perhaps revising your question would produce the results you desire.

As to your reference to military security, I do know a little about that.

Sincerely,

Ray Lewis, MCSE
Master Sergeant, USMC (Ret.)

Geez, Ray. I already apologized for the frustration reflected in my answer, did not consider it an attack on you and readily admit my fallibility. If I knew all, I wouldn't be asking this question, which obviously could be more detailed and complete. On the other hand, you admitted you did not thoroughly read the post. I apologize again for being so reactionary. I guess my primary hope has been that someone would see it who has experienced the problem and be able to tell me what they didto resolve it.

Part of my frustration is that in this particular Techrepublic forum, I think some of the responders are driven at least somewhat by the points and scan for questions that have not been answered. Once you have an answer, be it good or not, it takes you out of the unaswered queue and a lot of folks don't even look at it. I have had this question posted for 4-6 weeks with one response until yesterday, when I cancelled it and reposted it new. I got your answer within a coupleof hours. I have had no others since then.

Anyway, sorry for being so snappy. I do appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Please enlighten me to the 'common' Win9x insecurity to which you refer. We are running what we consider to be a highly secure NT/Unix/mainframe network and are not aware of any clients being able to access it without proper logon.
