print jobs disappearing

By Seadogs ·
We are having a problem with an hp color laser 8550n. It is attached to the network via a jet direct card and run off a windows 2000 server. We are using the latest PS driver from HP. We print from NT 4.0 sp6a and windows 2000 pc's. We use mostly programs like quarkexpress and photoshop and illustrator to print to this printer device. Often print jobs never come out...they appear to make it to the printer device - it says processing job on the screen, but gets hung up. We have to shut theprint device completely off and power back up. Then if we send the job again, there is a 50/50 chance of it coming out. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated

I test drivers for a living and they can be a bear at times. This type of printer problem isn't always an easy fix, but here's some questions to look at if you haven't already tried them.

Note that Ethernet connections have a distance limit and after 100 meters in a segment, signals will "fade" and could produce exactly the problen you describe. You might check with the person who installed the printer onto the network.

Is you network connection reliable? A good way to test this is withthe HP JetAdmin utility. If you can see the printer and make setting changes to it repeatedly, it's probably OK.

Try the original driver that came with the printer. It may not be the latest, but it's usually a good matchup to start off with. Also, I assume you're using the corect OS version of the driver. NT4 is a different driver than Win2k, etc.

How was the printer installed? Was the HP 8550 Printing System software installed to the workstations? Was the printer installed simply using the .inf file (just the driver with no other software tools)

Can any workstation or application print successfully all the time? If so, look for what's different about that installation or configuration.

Can you successfully ping the printer every try? If no, there's definately a network configuration problem. If yes, it's more likely the driver or workstation configuration for the printer.

HP is pretty good about assistance with this stuff, but I've not found anything in their knowledgebase about your particular problem. You might send their support center an email or give them a call.

Good luck.. hope I was of some help...

You are printing from quark express and adobe photoshop, this implies to me that you are sending involved illustrations, color photo's, in other words, rather large files.
Normally not an issue with this printer, however, this file size can sometimes be an issue with NT/Win2K. When printing from NT, the print job is sent to a "spool" file and assembled (or processed) before it is actually sent to the printer. This spool file is manageable thru printer propertis, and is also dependant upon swapfile. The swap file in NT based systems is often far less flexible than it would be with Win9x,

I would like to suggest increasing the size of the swap file for systems that print to this printer. And also from printer properties, more direct management of print job spooling.

Good luck...

I have seen similar circumstances and it usually turns out to be a network problem like a bad patch cable. Try replacing the patch cable, and if possible try testing the printer with the Jetdirect connected directly to a hub/switch, or at least tryconnecting to a different network jack.

Is a swap file the same as a paging file?
