Print quality graphics

I need to start producing full page print adverts in quark xpress on a PC. However, I encounter problems when preparing the necessary graphics in Photoshop 5. The graphics need to be at least 300dpi which means a very large file size. If I wish to stick to using a PC rather than buying a Mac, what hardware do I need to complete these sorts of projects? Obviously hard disc size and speed is a major factor, but is it the only one? Would a better graphics card or faster processor or more RAM make a lot of difference too?
