Print Queues failing to clear

By d.ferguson ·
We are running an NT 4.0 server and are having problems with our print queues. it started with Apple 8500 print queues but occasionally affects Hp 4050 q's.

The print job will reach the print queue and sometime print but not clear, sometimes not print, just sit there, and other times look like it is going to print (Flashing light on Printer) but nothing happens. we then get a timeout error message...i ahve adjusted the timeout values both to increase and decrease, but this seems to have no effect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Darren

Go to the Control Pannel/Services of NT Server. Stop and start the SPOOLER service.
If your Print Spooler file is in a HD Partition with little free space then make this spooler file on another partition.

Thanks
Hasan

Check the print job. Is it a complicated job and does the printer have enough memory to handle it? Sending a job with large graphics can cause the printer to not print them. Just an idea. Godd luck!

Insure that you have Service Pack 6a installed. SP6 had bugs in the spooler process, and SP6a fixed those bugs.

i would check the memory of the printer, and, for simplicity's sake, you may want to reboot the server. that works quite a bit.

I've run into a problem quite similar to this. It turned out to be a printer name problem. I had chosen a naming convention which was a bit long. Some networking hardware, and some software (even full 32 bit) has trouble resolving long names. Try shortening the name of the printer/que and see what happens. Good luck.
