Print server not listed

By nschloss ·
We have a Win2003 server with a number of print shares on it. When users try to 'add a printer' this server does not present itself (whereas all other print servers do). Not sure where to begin to troubleshoot ...

It sounds to me like you do not have the permissions to even see the 2003 server from the machine.

One way to find out is install the printer using another method. This will tell you for sure where the issue resides.

Go to my network places, browse to the server in question. If you need a password to access the server , then its permissions. If you can get to the shares on the server, you should see a printer sitting there with the share name you applied to it on the server when you shared it.. If its not there, then you have not setup the shared printer successfully. If the printer is there, you should be able to right click on it and choose open. If you do that it should install the printer to the local machine. IF that doesn't work then I would check the user rights on the local computer to make sure they can add new software and load drivers.

If one of the above doesn't solve your issue, I would be very surprised.

Please let me know with a follow up how it went.

Good Luck....

What a user can do is go through Start / Run / \\servername and see all the shares for that server. Right clicking on a printer share and choosing Open installs the printer. No problems. Not sure if this helps with clues to my original question ... ?
