Print servers

I have 20 print servers set up on w2000, workstations are on NT4 sp6.
when printing it reads on the printer properties box : "spooling...." about a good minute even on 1 page excel sheet.
Win2000 server specs: PIII 1 GHZ, 20 GB HD, 640 MB Ram.
Ihad the same setup on NT4 server , print speed is faster.
Pls advise

Make sure the Print Server properties on the advanced tab have the proper path: C:\WINNT\System32\spool\PRINTERS is default unless specifically changed. Delete any possible corrupted spooled printjobs which may be residing in this folder, then try sending a print job and see if it's quicker.

Answer #1 is an excellent troubleshooting method.
System specs are more than plenty for the assigned task.

Also consider that the network configuration may be different if these are new servers or new builds. i.e. the NIC settings (Speed/Duplex) may not match those of the hub/switch/router and therefore extreme packet loss could also be a culprit.

And don't forget about the perf mon tools to determine how the system is allocating resources, especially. You might find your print spooler is slow because some piece of hardware is bombing your CPU with IRQ requests, or some other obscure problem and therefore leaving little resources left for printing.
