Print Spooler doesn't work but Printing Directly works

By gbourlo ·
Been in the business a long time but this one has me stumped. I've tried new drivers, new printers and I can't get my print spooler to work. When I try to use the spooler it says device not found yet when I click the "Print Directly To Printer" it works fine. I can't even remember all the tools, fixes, tricks I've tried in the last 3 months. I've reloaded XP already and obviously it's not overwriting the files needed to fix the problem.

try stopping the spooler service and the clear out any files in the spool directory. Also set the print server proprerties to make sure all the printer spooling is on. You may also need to remove all the printers and then delete the drivers underneath the spool folder.

tried it last night

mafergus,

thanks for the help. I did that last night in attempt yo start all over in case I missed something. Unfortunately it didn't do anything. Aside from reformating and reloading I'm stumped. It's an 5 year old system and up to date on all patches and I can't reformat and reload.

Everythime I click the spooler option, it just doesn't work and the jobs hang

Did the logs show anything? Just for fun try moving the spool directory

Logs

Ok, tried moving the spooler, no go. The thing about this is everything says it's working even in hardware, it says the device is OK. When you print, it instantly says Job failed to print, would you like to troubleshoot, etc, etc, etc.

drivers

by mafergus In reply to sorry, wrong file

Everything still seems to point at driver corruption And I believe corrupted files are not getting overwritten. So let's try one last time

1. Uninstall hp drivers from add/remove programs

2. Delete all the drivers in the printers and faxes window under File>>Server properties

3. delete all the files under the drivers and spool directories
*WINDIR*\system32\spool\printers\
*WINDIR*\\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\ (Delete everything except for the directories labeled 2 and 3, but delete the contents of those folders)

4. Clear the entries for those files from the registry per the following knowledgebase link

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312052

5. Just for overkill run cleanspl from the resource kit

6. restart the spooler

7. pray

mafergus, hey it works, thanks

by gbourlo In reply to Print Spooler doesn't wor ...

Thanks for the procedure. As I was going through erasing what I needed, I came across an HP DLL that wouldn't let me delete it. I finally went through a CMD promt and got it deleted. One of the software programs said it was in use, yet I kmow it wasn't. It was probably the file that never got overwritten.

Once I went through the REGEDIT line by line I deinstalled all HP software and then ONLY installed the drivers I needed. Interesting, there is a an Install program from HP and one of the steps is to install it without plugging in the printer. At a certain point it says to hook it up and goes through a few minutes of handshaking.

Right around the time I did this last time, I don't remember having unplugged the printer. Could be what caused the issues. Anyway, thanks for the walk through, I did so many things over the months I lost track of the troubleshooting procedure. Thanks for putting me on track again.

I use to preach "Back to the basics" and I didn't follow my own preaching. Thanks buddy

I've been watching this with interest.

It's great that it's resolved. <br>
It'd be even better to see that mafergus' answers were marked as helpful so a thumbs-up would appear next to every helpful answer. TR keeps track of how many helpful answers people give by thumbs-ups. It's in lieu of a beer, I guess.
