Why must I go to server to get the printer icon back in the icon tray and the printer to work again?

You cannot have the driver loaded on your machine. Try copying the driver onto a shared drive or disk from the server and uploading it. Alternatively, it may be on a Windows boot disk.

Is this a networked printer or a stand-alone.
It sounds as if you have a HP desktop printer that resides in your tray normally (even when not in use)? If so, and it has disappeared from your try then try the following:

1) make sure that thecables (both the power cord and the parallel cable - or USB - or whatever your computer connects to the printer with) have not fallen loose at either the printer side or the computer side.

2) power on the printer

3) find you printer's toolbox(or you can click on start --> Settings --> Printers --> right-click on the printer --> Properties --&gt and then click on the "print a test page" button) ; you should get a test printout. And it should come back into the tray.

If the above fails, then go to control panel --> Add/remove programs and highlight the printer drivers and click on the remove. Reboot your computer and re-install the printer drivers.

For a networked printer, the drivers reside on the server. You direct the install to the server for driver consistency.

If your printing is runing on win2k printq you have to authenticate with the server to print ,
you have to log in to domain and then be able to use the printer, if by novell printing you have to log in to novell as well, if you are printing thru ipyou dun have to log in to anything, all u got to have is network . So if you don't log in to win2k domain(WIN2K PrintQ) or novell..(printing thru novell queue) . naturally you cannot see the printer unless it is thru ip printing or LPT.
