Printer and Scanner

By kerry.howard@welcon.com. ·
I have a Agfa SnapScan 1236 scanner and a Canon BJC-4650 running Win NT. I have the scanner plugged into the computer works fine. The printer works fine. Plug the printer into the back of the scanner and it locks the computer up each time I restart. I have changed the BIOS settings from ECP to EPP with no effect. I have reinstalled drivers still no go. This was working before, is there a magical way of holding your mouth when configuring this installation??
Thanks for your help I am getting desperate

OK, you're using the "pass through parallel port" on the scanner to talk with the printer.

I would make sure:
- latest NT service pack (6a)
- latest Agfa drivers
- latest Canon drivers
- reload SP6a

You know how these patches can be. They seem to "go away" from time to time and need to be reloaded.

Start from scratch and connect the components togeather
Install the scanner software and drivers first.
Install the printer drivers and then the software, there is a .inf file that needs to be loaded into the registry before the software is loaded. If it still does not work go to the printer web site and research for info pertaining to this problem. I finally gave up,when I upgraded my system to a faster CPU,and it seems as though the scanner could not keep up with the speed.

We had a simular prob with a Zip drive and HP printer. HP said the printer was a Host printer type, and had no internal "smarts" and relied on the PC for eveything. The pass thru port conflicted with this. What we had to do was install a second parallel port card. Maybe the Cannon has the same problems.
Good Luck. Dave,,

Sounds logical and thanks, but this was working at one stage so that cannot be the answer to this problem.

I have ran into this before also.
It is extremely frustrating.
I gave up and added an additional parallel port (hardware - card). They are cheap and I no longer have any conflicts.

This "piggy back" method of connecting printer into scanner is about as worthy as the airheads that came up with the idea of doing this in the first place.

Do yourself a favor and just get a parallel card and drop it in - pass GO and don't even bother trying to figure out WHY things aren't working the way you're trying now.

Better yet, promote that Agfa to the scrapyard and get yourself a USB scanner - your life will be significantly more meaninful now......aaaaahhhh the virtues of technology....

Good luck

I would love to promote the scanner to the scrap yard but it is not mine to do so or I would of done this 6 months ago.
