Printer causing win 98 to hang...

By darren ·
Hi Guys,

Got a pc with windows 98 on it. We have a fresh install and new up to date drivers for our HP 420 printer. But when ever we go to print in economy print the PC hangs completely and we have to reboot.

Any ideas whats causing this or how to correct it?

We did a fresh install in hope to fix this error but it didnt work..

What was done to this unit before it stopped working?

If you installed the latest HP Drivers then the most likely cause is that they are not as solid as supposed, have you tried an earlier version of the drivers? Have you tried not printing in Economy Mode? If so does it work properly?

It really sounds like a Software problem and Win 98 Drivers are now getting a bit long in the tooth so if HP has recently provided new drivers for this printer they may not be up to scratch and work fully.

Prints fine in normal mode just economy. Using the latest driver version 8.5 created in 2003. I cant find an older version to try.

only things i can offer are:
make sure you have plenty of free, defragged hd space (i know, i know, i am just mentioning...)
make sure you have latest usb drivers for your motherboard. and latest firmware for the printer.
if driver is set to use 'raw' then change to 'emf' or change to 'emf' from 'raw'
try changing to print directly to printer.
almost sounds like hardware. have you taken everything else off the usb port and are you using a usb 2 port...
